Chiffon & Georgette

The fluid sisters of Indian party wear — soft, forgiving drapes that move with you on the dance floor.

Heritage
French-named weaves fully adopted by Indian fashion since the mid-20th century, famously popularised by royal and Bollywood wardrobes.
How it's made
Plain weave with alternating high-twist yarns; georgette uses harder twists for a springier, matte crepe surface, chiffon lighter twists for a smoother sheer.

What are chiffon and georgette?

Chiffon and georgette are lightweight, sheer-to-semi-sheer fabrics built from high-twist yarns that give them fluidity instead of stiffness. Chiffon is the finer, smoother, more transparent of the two; georgette is slightly heavier with a pebbled crepe texture and less transparency. In practice they are the workhorses of Indian occasion wear — nearly every “flowy” saree or floor-sweeping Anarkali you’ve admired is one of the two.

Cultural place in Indian fashion

The chiffon saree carries real history in India: from the 1930s onward, royal households and then Hindi cinema made the plain pastel chiffon saree an icon of understated glamour — a look that still reads instantly elegant today. Georgette became the embroiderer’s favourite: strong enough to carry sequins, resham, and zari embroidery, yet still fluid on the body.

How they’re made

Both start with yarns twisted so hard they crinkle. Woven plainly and then finished, the twist relaxes into the characteristic crepe surface. Silk versions are the luxury grade; fine polyester and viscose georgettes deliver the same drape at accessible prices — we work with both and will tell you plainly which your budget buys.

Made to measure with us

Georgette is our default recommendation for dance-heavy events — sangeet shararas, cocktail sarees, and Anarkalis with heavy flare all move best in it. Chiffon we suggest for the minimal, jewellery-forward look. Both are forgiving on fit, but made-to-measure makes the difference between “flowy” and “shapeless” — that’s the part we obsess over.

Care instructions

  • Gentle hand wash cold or dry clean; heavy embellishment always means dry clean.
  • Never wring — roll in a towel to remove water.
  • Iron on the lowest setting, inside out.
  • Store folded; these fabrics don't crease-damage like crisp weaves.
